X-ray laser: The Xfel is opened

Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 | Gadgets

It is intended to provide a glimpse into the world of atoms: On 1 September, the European Xfel – an abbreviation for X-Ray free-electron laser (X-ray free-electron laser) will be opened. The scientific experiments are about to begin.

The Xfel is a microscope and a camera for the world of atoms. In a 3.4-kilometer tunnel ultrasound, high-energy X-ray flashes are generated from electron packets. These are directed into the experimental hall. Using the X-ray flashes, scientists shot samples to capture images and films of molecules or chemical reactions.

This Friday, the 1.2 billion euro expensive facility will be opened. Around 800 guests, including Federal Research Minister Johanna Wanka (CDU), will attend the ceremony. On the occasion, several lasers were installed in Hamburg, which were directed to the experimental hall in Schenefeld. A laser is installed at the Elbphilharmonie.

The first X-ray laser pulses were generated in May. The first experiments are scheduled for mid-September. Two scientists from the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg as well as colleagues from Russia and Great Britain will carry them out.
Golem.de visited the Xfel last year and explained how the plant works.
