What Barack Obama was doing Donald Trump

Sunday, September 3rd, 2017 | World News

Former US President Barack Obama left his successor, Donald Trump, to the White House in January, for a conciliatory and cautious letter.

In the letter, the content of which became public on Sunday, Obama reflects on the responsibilities of the President's office – including the obligation to guard democracy.

The handwritten letter left Obama on the day of the swearing in of his Republican successor in the Oval Office, as is the case with office changes in the White House tradition. What is written in these letters is generally known only later.

Obama starts writing "CNN" with the congratulations "to a successful race". He points to the importance of American leadership and warns against undermining basic democratic principles for the sake of political advantages.

"We hold this office only temporarily, which makes us guardians of these democratic institutions and traditions – like the rule of law, division of power, equal protection and civil rights – for which our ancestors fought and shed blood," Obama said. "Notwithstanding the pressure and the pulling power of the day's policy, it is up to us to leave these instruments at least as strong as we have found them."
