WD Gold: Western Digital brings HDD with 12 Terabyte capacity

Thursday, September 14th, 2017 | Gadgets

Western Digital (WD), the hard disk manufacturer, has announced the new WD Gold. It is a magnetic hard drive in the 3.5 inch format with 12 terabytes of storage capacity, which complements the product series. It is targeted at the server market and is designed for cloud infrastructure and big data applications. In addition to the 12-byte variant, WD also offers 10- and 8-tbyte models with the same size cache.

This is correspondingly large for such a capacity: 256 MB are available to the disk. With 128 MB of cache, however, there are still models with 1, 2, 4 and 6 TB capacity. The disks of the hard disk rotate at 7,200 rpm. The response time should thus be similar to a conventional model for the retail market, for example a Western Digital Black. This should also apply to writers and readers who are not mentioned. The disk has a Sata 6 Gb / s interface, no SAS.
Reliable on paper
This is the MTBF stated by the manufacturer at 2.500.000 hours, which is significantly higher than consumer HDDs and SSDs. Western Digital also provides a maximum number of load and unload cycles of 600,000. This value indicates how often the write head can be inserted or extended until the disk is likely to fail.

According to Western Digital, the WD Gold is resistant to shocks. The data sheet gives a force of 70 g during operation. Off, the product holds up to 300 g. It can also be stored at -40 to +70 degrees Celsius. In operation, it maintains temperatures of 5 to 60 degrees Celsius. The maximum power consumption is 7 watts.

The WD Gold with 12 TByte capacity can be ordered at the manufacturer for about 520 US Dollar. In long-term tests it was rather the hard drives of the WD subsidiary HGST – formerly Hitachi -, which had little failures. This can be seen in the quarterly reports of back-up service provider Backblaze. 12TB hard disks are also available from this company.
