Turkish intelligence workers seeking asylum in Germany

Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 | World News

One year after the attempted coup attempt in Turkey, the number of asylum applications by Turkish citizens has not declined. According to media reports, several high-ranking police officers and members of the intelligence service have now applied for asylum in Germany.

According to this, a senior official of the Turkish National Police will have filed an asylum application in the Federal Republic this year. A Turkish officer, who worked in the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), was also reported to have applied for asylum. At the request of the newspaper "Die Welt", the Federal Ministry of the Interior did not want to express itself to individuals with a reference to personality and data protection.

Around 150,000 state servicemen, including police officers, lawyers and teachers, were released in Turkey in July 2016, following the failed state coup. They are suspected of being adherents of the Gülen movement, which is blamed by the Turkish government for the coup attempt.
In Germany, since August 2016, about 6700 Turkish citizens have applied for asylum. Among them are several hundred members of the military, persons with diplomatic status and their families.
