Tsunami warning: heavy earthquake hits Mexico

A heavy earthquake of magnitude 8.4 has occurred off the coast of Mexico. So far at least five dead people have been reported, even in the capital Mexico City the earth has been shaken. According to the responsible tsunami warning center, the quake caused smaller tsunami waves of up to 70 cm in height.

The epicenter of the earthquake lay off the Pacific coast in southeastern Mexico at a depth of about 19 kilometers. In the state of Chiapas, at least three people died, according to Governor Manuel Velasquez.

Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto spoke of a tremendous tremors, the strongest in Mexico since 1932. has announced rapid emergency action. He has ordered immediate crisis meetings of the relevant government agencies "to monitor, assess and take action," he said on Twitter. He set out for the national disaster center.
