Trump worries about immigration for chaos

Thursday, September 14th, 2017 | World News

Did the US president agree with the opposition or not? In the discussion about immigration policy, Donald Trump provokes great confusion.

Leading representatives of the Democrats initially declared that they had agreed with Trump to quickly adopt a law to protect young immigrants from deportation. Trump disagreed. There had been no deal with the opposition.

"Pretty close" to an agreement
He later said that he was "fairly close" to the congress, but that a solution had to be found for the border guards. He insisted that the wall on the border with Mexico must be part of the immigration policy.

The President, however, also recognized the scope for negotiation. He suggested, for example, that the package could be separated from the wall by the so-called Daca program to protect young immigrants. "Daca now and the wall very soon, but the wall will come," he told a question on Thursday afternoon.

Trump sneaks his own party
The statements were only the most recent in a series that caused confusion in the US on Thursday. Trump had already entered the negotiations on important political steps with the Democrats for the second time on Wednesday evening and had thus snubbed parts of his own Republican party.

The Daca program has given a provisional protection status to hundreds of thousands of young people who illegally immigrated to the United States as children with their parents. It kept them from expulsion. They also received a work permit. The initiative had been introduced by Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, by decree, and never had the status of a law.

Congress is to find new regulations
Trump had decided a week ago to end the program. However, he accepted a six-month deadline. He called on the Congress to find a new regulation during this period.

The leading Democrats from House of Representatives and Senate, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, met Trump on Wednesday night. They then declared, "We have agreed to quickly secure the protection of Daca in a law, and to work on a package to protect the frontiers, which is acceptable to both sides."

On Thursday morning Pelosi and Schumer declared that they had not spoken of a definite agreement in the evening.

Trump said at a brief appearance before journalists that they were working on a plan for the Daca program. "I think we're pretty close, but we need a massive border guard." Asked whether the leading Republicans Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell were on his side, the President agreed. He was talking to them.

Was the conversation just a non-committal discussion?
Ryan described the conversation between Trump and the Democrats on Thursday as a "discussion". It was not a negotiation, there was no agreement, declared the chairman of the House of Representatives.

The dissidents between the President and the Democrats were also about the wall that the Republican wants to build on the border with Mexico. Schumer and Pelosi said that they had agreed with Trump that the project should not be part of an agreement on border security. The President, however, had clarified that he wanted to push it forward at a later date.

Trumps in this respect were initially spongy. "The wall, which is already under construction, because old and existing fences are renewed, will be built further," he wrote in the morning in the short news service Twitter.

Later, he said, "The Wall will come later. We are just about to rework large parts, we make them completely new."

When he went back to journalists at noon, he said, "We must have a wall at the end." The construction project is not negotiable, he explained to the Democrats' address. There had to be an agreement that the financing of the wall would be clarified "in a fairly short period of time". "They (the Democrats) can not block the wall, we have to get the wall, and if we do not get the wall, we'll block it."

The edifice on the border with Mexico was one of the central promises of the electorate's political career. But how the billionaire mega-project is to be financed is completely unclear.

President tries the balancing act
Trump sees himself in the difficult situation that, on the one hand, he has been campaigning for non-party solutions for days, but on the other hand he wants to satisfy his basic needs. The President suggested on Thursday that he had no interest in the deportation of immigrants protected by Daca. "Will someone seriously, well-educated and savvy young people from the country who have jobs and some of whom serve in the military?", He wrote in another tweet message.

He also made it clear that he did not want to grant amnesty to the affected person or give them citizenship.

The public hickshack from Thursday marked another highlight in tagelangen efforts between Trump and the Democrats to test a public cooperation. Last week Trump already agreed with the Democratic factional leaders to grant Fluthilfen in billions of euros and simultaneously raise the debt ceiling. Both sides enjoyed a surprise surprise. The president thus dubbed his own party, which saw itself more and more in the role of the spectator.

Trump had insulted the Democrats for months, accusing them of blocking important projects. However, he also increasingly felt frustrated about his own party. Several attempts by the Republicans to abolish and replace the "Obamacare" health care system failed. In addition, the conservatives were pushing new sanctions against Russia to the annoyance of the president.
