The number of tourists worldwide rose by 6.4 per cent in the first half of the year – the highest increase in seven years. The Mediterranean region was particularly popular.
According to World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on Thursday, there were 598 million international tourists between January and June, 36 million more than in the first half of 2016.
According to the Madrid-based UNO organization, the reasons for the increase in travel numbers were higher trust and greater demand for travel to profitable markets such as the USA, China, Great Britain and France.
The first half of the year showed a "healthy growth" in an ever more resilient tourism market, explained UNWTO General Secretary Taleb Rifai. In many regions, which had to contend with security restrictions last year, the situation is easing.
The tourism sector in the Mediterranean region rose particularly strongly, including in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey, the organization said. Southern Europe and the European Mediterranean region were visited by 12 percent more people, while the Middle East rose by almost 9 percent. The most visited region is Europe as a whole, with an increase of 7.7 percent.
Since the financial crisis in 2009, the sector has grown by around 4 per cent annually according to UNWTO. This high growth rate is expected to continue. UNWTO is expecting another three to four percent growth in tourism this year. By 2030, the number of travelers from today will rise 1.2 billion to 1.8 billion, according to which Rifai will benefit all regions.
