Saturday, August 19th, 2017 | World News

Police reported that the knife attack on passersby in the Finnish Turku is a terrorist assassination attempt. An 18 year old Moroccan was urgently suspected of doing so, the security authorities said.

The suspect is accused of killing two people and injuring another eight before the police could stop him with a shot. The 18-year-old had been injured shortly after the act by police officers at the hip or the leg.

In the university hospital of Turku, two of the victims were in the intensive care unit, as did the police. Five other injuries were also treated in the clinic. Among the injured were Swedish and Italian citizens.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and his cabinet had been brought up to date at a special meeting on the late Friday evening. According to the police, at this point, he was still looking for possible complications of the alleged offender. But the situation is under control, they said.

The security precautions have been strengthened nationwide, including at the airport of the capital Helsinki and at railway stations. Turku is about 170 kilometers west of Helsinki on the south-west coast of Finland. About 190,000 people live in the city.
