Survey on the Bundestag election: Union builds ahead

Monday, August 21st, 2017 | World News

The Union is able to further expand its lead over the SPD by five weeks before the Bundestag election. CDU / CSU are one percentage point in the current "Sunday trend" of the opinion research institute Emnid and now come to 39 percent. The SPD remains at 24 percent.

The left loses a point, but can defend the third place with nine per cent. The Greens are now gaining one point and are now eight points ahead of the FDP. The AfD loses a point compared to the previous week and stands at seven percent. The other parties together amount to five percent.

For the "Sonntagstrend", Emnid interviewed a total of 1426 representative people from 10 to 16 August. The question was, "Which party would you choose if the Bundestag elections were next Sunday?"

Gabriel does not rule out a grand coalition
With these values, a Chancellor's office for Martin Schulz is getting far and wide – but the Union will probably not be able to form a majority without the SPD, should the FDP stand against a three-way variant with the Greens. Wolfgang Kubicki, deputy chairman of the FDP, had expressed a skeptical attitude towards a possible Jamaican coalition during the weekend.

Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) is therefore no longer categorically concluding a continuation of the grand coalition after the Bundestag elections. "Neither the CDU / CSU nor we want a continuation of the grand coalition. In the end, electors vote, which is also quite good in a democracy," said the SPD politician.

The top topics in the election campaign
As a further Emnid survey for "Bild am Sonntag" showed, a majority of Germans consider efforts to achieve equal educational opportunities as well as the fight against poverty of old age and crime for the top election campaigns. On the other hand, the limitation of immigration and electromobility is not of paramount importance for the citizens.

For this survey, Emnid surveyed 1009 representative German citizens last Wednesday and Thursday. The question was: "How important are the following tasks for your vote at the Bundestag elections?"
