Suicide bomb near US embassy in Kabul: At least five dead

Tuesday, August 29th, 2017 | World News

It was the second heavy attack within a week in Kabul – and the twelfth since January. This time, the people of Afghanistan were killed in a bank.

In a suicide attack in front of a bank in the Afghan capital Kabul, at least five people have been killed. This is what Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid said. A minimum of nine other people were injured. In front of a branch of the Kabul Bank at lively Massud Square, a man had blown himself into the air. In Afghanistan, important religious holidays begin in a few days. Banks are particularly crowded because many people pick up their salaries and bonuses to buy victuals, new clothes and delicacies.

At first, no group acknowledged the deed. It was the twelfth major attack in the Afghan capital since January. Hundreds of people have since been killed or injured.

The US embassy and NATO headquarters are also located near the attack site, behind massive barriers. US President Donald Trump presented a week ago the new Afghanistan strategy of his government, which foresees an increased military commitment. "A goal is to prevent the radical Islamic Taliban from taking over Afghanistan again," said Trump.

Only four days ago, fighters of the Sunni terrorist Islamic state (IS) had attacked a Shiite mosque in Kabul, killed at least 29 people and injured more than 40.
