Starcraft Remastered on Test: Click, klick, klick, klick, klick as it was 1998

Thursday, August 17th, 2017 | Gadgets

Starcraft's development began at Blizzard as a texture package for Warcraft 2. The studio simply swapped the forest and meadows sprites through metal and space and changed the units. Instead of orcs, there was Zerg. With Starcraft Remastered, the developers have actually applied the same procedure graphically. Now, instead of thematically different textures, higher-resolved sprites are now on the old framework.

With the F5 key, players in Starcraft Remastered impressively understand the optical transformation from 1998 to 2017. All units, buildings and floor textures are now available in 4k resolution. The animation levels were also slightly increased. This makes it possible to see details that were only visible in the low-resolution pixel cluster of 640 x 480.
Starcraft Remastered supports resolutions up to 4K (3.840 x 2.160 UHD). Playfully, however, has no effect. Players can now zoom into the graphics, but there is no more overview than the original. Only the new optional aspect of 16: 9 instead of 4: 3 allows a bit more overview, as left and right more of the game is displayed.
Blizzard allows individual configuration of the changes. Players can also use the new native resolution textures with black bars on the left and right, adjust the frame rate, descramble animation levels, and of course personalize the keyboard shortcuts.
The APM Festival of Clicks
Blizzard does not have the moderate way of finding the units. If you want to move up to a maximum of 12 units at the same time and send them over the map with a single click, you will lose a few troops in most cases. Most of the deficits of the path finding are avoided by a continuous repetition of the inputs. That's why Starcraft pros also have the highest APM (promotions per minute) in e-sports. You send units not only once down a slope, or attack with a right-click, but click again as often as possible. The game calculates a new best route with every click.

The APM monitor, which displays the actions per minute in real-time, is particularly useful. Players can even set their own threshold for an alarm. As soon as the value is undershot, a warning signal will sound.

Remastered E-Sport?
Starcraft 1 is still an important part of the professional game scene. Will Starcraft Remastered be in the E-Sport in the square of the original? Community, Blizzard and pros have not yet agreed, as we already learned in the interview with professional player Dario TLO Wünsch. It would be desirable, however, from our point of view: the multi-player experience is enhanced by the remastered version the strongest.
The Observer mode with which the transmissions are implemented offers a little more overview than before and was optimized for performance. All in all, Blizzard provides only necessary updates. For example, if you compare the viewing pleasure with a current e-sports game like Dota 2, you quickly realize that even more could have been possible. Statistics, replays or simply the possibility of interaction are still missing.
