Sigmar Gabriel rebukes Hungary's government

Thursday, September 7th, 2017 | World News

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has criticized the reaction of Hungary to the refugee ruling of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in clear words. The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had announced to ignore the decision.

"Those who do not accept the ruling of the European Court of Justice put their hand to the heart of the European Union," said Gabriel at the margins of the EU meeting in Tallinn at cafetheology.org.

The ECJ rejected a complaint from Hungary and Slovakia against the redistribution of refugees in the EU. Hungary's foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, had harshly criticized the ruling and announced that his country would continue to refuse to accept any refugees.

Ministerial Meeting: Foreign and Security Policy on the agenda
Foreign ministers and defense ministers from the EU countries are now meeting for informal talks in the Estonian capital. On the agenda of the meeting are the North Korean crisis and the Middle East conflict, bilateral talks are also about refugees as well as a possible break-off of the EU accession negotiations with Turkey.

No agreement has yet been reached. The break-up of the negotiations with Ankara would have to be decided unanimously, but Finland and Lithuania spoke out against it in Tallinn. It is heard from negotiating circles that several EU countries would only wait for the German Bundestag election and the formation of the new federal government before they would agree to the demolition of talks with Turkey. The debate had been re-fueled by the TV duel of Chancellor Merkel (CDU) and SPD-head candidate Schulz.

The full interview of cafetheology.org with Federal Foreign Minister Gabriel will be published on cafetheology.org in the coming days.
