Ryzen 7 1800X: AMD confirms compiler error on Linux

Sunday, August 13th, 2017 | Gadgets

Numerous Linux users had reported on violations (Segmentation Fault, SegFault) during compilation, which appeared on systems with AMD's new Ryzen processors. Now AMD has confirmed the problem, which is still unclear, which exactly triggers the error. Together with developers and users, the Ryzen manufacturer is now seeking to identify the cause of the infringement. Affected users should contact AMD's Customer Care.

In the AMD forum the script kill-ryzen.sh was presented, which provokes the reproducible error. It quickly became clear that only one process type is affected: the Octacore processor Ryzen 7 1800X. The website Phoronix confirmed the AMD and assured that the processors of the threadripper series are not affected. Also on systems with Zen processors like AMDs Epyc the error probably does not occur.
High load is the trigger
The protection violation appears to occur only under exceptional load, especially when compiling on several parallel processes. At least in the everyday use there is apparently no segmentation faults. Under Windows, the error could not be reproduced. The problem was first observed under the BSD system Dragonfly by the developer Matthew Dillon at the end of March 2017. The Ryzen 7 1800X was introduced a few days earlier.

Since the release of the new Ryzen series, there have been several problems with the new processors – even under Windows.
