Russian ambassador found dead in Sudan

Thursday, August 24th, 2017 | World News

The Russian Ambassador in Sudan, Mirgajas Shirinski, was found dead in his swimming pool in Khartoum. The 62-year-old probably suffered a heart attack. He was the fourth Russian ambassador who died in his foreign post within a year.

Shirinsky died in the Sudanese capital on Wednesday night, according to the Sudanese police. The Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova said that embassy staff had called a doctor. "But it was not possible to save Schirinski." After initial investigations, Sudanese investigators went on Wednesday with a "natural death". The diplomat, born in 1954, had taken the post in Khartoum in 2013.

Within a year, four high-ranking Russian diplomats have already been killed. Vitaly Churkin, the Russian representative at the United Nations, had collapsed and died in February. In January, Alexander Kadakin, the Russian Ambassador to India, died after a disease. In December Andrey Karlov, Moscow's envoy in Ankara, had been shot by an assassin.
