Quotas? Turkish community wants more politicians with foreign roots

Friday, September 8th, 2017 | World News

The Turkish community of Germany has called for migrant quotas in the nomination of political parties in Germany.

"The parties must take seriously the desire of the German Turks to take it seriously, and not just leave it to their lips," said Gökay Sofuoglu, head of the German editorial team. A quota could increase the number of candidates with an immigration background and promote the identification of the foreign population with the German party system.

On Friday, the Turkish community will present a position paper with integration policy requirements for the post-Bundestag elections. According to the report, the report calls for the introduction of a Federal Ministry for Migration and Integration, the right to vote for non-EU citizens and the liberalization of visa waivers for citizens from Turkey. The Turkish community also calls for the establishment of a federal commissioner against racism and right-wing extremism as a consequence of the NSU murders.
