Saudi Arabia criticizes the relationship between Qatar and Iran. Nevertheless, Qatar is expanding its diplomatic relations with the Shiite neighboring state.

The Qatar ambassador is to return to Iran. "Qatar expresses its hope of strengthening bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran," the Doha Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement.

Qatar is isolated on the Arabian Peninsula because the Sunni-dominated neighbors accuse the small desert mufti of being too close to Iran.

At the beginning of 2015, the emirate, like other Sunni states, had withdrawn its ambassador from Tehran from solidarity with Saudi Arabia. The decision was a reaction to an attack by Iranian demonstrators on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran.

Since the beginning of June 2017, however, Qatar has been isolated from its Sunni neighbors. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Egypt, had broken off diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing Qatar of terrorism and maintaining close ties with Iran. Last month, Saudi Arabia had warned Qatar that closer ties with Iran would "make even more anger for Qatar."
