Putin warns Trump of escalation spiral

Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 | World News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of an expansion of the North Korean conflict. Military pressure is a "dead end," Putin said in Moscow. Only through dialogue could "a conflict of large scale" in the region be avoided.

The background is the assessment of French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, that North Korea could be able to attack the US or Europe with nuclear weapons within a few months.

"Provocations, pressure and military and offensive rhetoric are a dead end," Putin warned. It was "haphazard and senseless" to hope that North Korea would only put pressure on its rocket tests. He responded to statements by US President Donald Trump, who had written on Twitter on Wednesday: "Speaking is not the solution". He had also threatened several times with a military intervention.

Putin commented in front of a summit of the four major emerging countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC), which begins on Sunday in Xiamen, China. Moscow and Beijing propose to settle the conflict that the US and South Korea will renounce joint military maneuvers and North Korea will cease its rocket tests in return.

Atomic equipped missiles "will be reality in a few months"
The French Defense Minister Le Drian called the crisis in the radio station RTL "extremely serious". North Korea is currently doing its utmost to bring nuclear-equipped rockets to operational readiness. "This will be a reality in a few months," said Le Drian. If the country is only able to meet the US and Europe with nuclear weapons, the situation becomes "explosive". That is why North Korea should return to the negotiating table.

On Tuesday, North Korea had fired a medium-range missile across Japan into the Pacific. The US and South Korea had then, two days later, raised combat aircraft above the Korean peninsula, demonstrating military strength. At the same time, Washington and its allies, Britain and Japan, renewed the demand for intensified sanctions against Pyongyang. However, the UN veto powers Russia and China reject this.

US citizens have been banned traveling to North Korea since Friday. The Foreign Ministry imposed the ban on the death of US student Otto Warmbier. After a North Korean trip in March 2016, he was condemned to a 15-year working camp for a theft of a propaganda poster, shortly afterwards he fell into a coma and was released "for humanitarian reasons" a few days before his death.

Shortly after his return to the United States, Warmbier died. After convincing his family, he succumbed to the consequences of his "terrible and agonizing treatment" in North Korea.
