Putin praises the Crimean connection as "historical justice"

Sunday, August 20th, 2017 | World News

The Russian President Vladimir Putin designated the connection of the Crimean port city Sevastopol to Russia in 2014 as a restoration of historical justice.

The Kremlinchef and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited the strategically important peninsula over the weekend. Sevastopol is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

In Putin's account the city would have had to be ceded to Russia at the end of 1991 when the Soviet Union decayed. "This was a one-time incident, which was simply forgotten," the President said on Friday before visitors to an antiques museum.

Instead, Sevastopol stayed with Ukraine. In the course of many years the fleet was divided between the two countries. Moscow signed a lease agreement for its naval base in 1997. After the change of power in Kiev in February 2014 Russian soldiers brought the Crimea under control. Russia held a referendum in March among the inhabitants and embraced the peninsula.

Putin's visit was overshadowed by severe storms that interrupted the power supply on the peninsula for about 11,000 people in the night on Saturday. On Sunday, according to the Kremlin, the president wanted to visit a youth camp in Crimea. The government in Kiev protested against the visit.
