Public Money Public Code: 31 organizations demand free software in the administration

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 | Gadgets

A group of 31 NGOs (non-governmental organizations) calls for more free software in public administration. Under the name of Public Money – Public Code, the campaign, headed by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), is committed to publicly publishing software projects under free licenses.

In addition to the FSFE, the supporting organizations include the Chaos Computer Club, Wikimedia Germany, the European umbrella organization EDRI and many others. Organizations hope to achieve a better accountability of the administration by verifiability of the code. Finally, an analysis of the program PC election used in Germany for the counting of votes revealed numerous, critical security gaps.

Edward Snowden also supports the campaign in his capacity as president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. He said, "Because the source code of unprotected software is often a business secret, it is difficult to find both inadvertently and intentionally built-in security gaps. It is now imperative to use reverse engineering for proprietary software to improve and strengthen it . "
The organizations also believe that more free software could lead to better handling of tax money. In addition, cooperation among authorities is to be improved. To this end, Matthias Kirschner from the Free Software Foundation Europe said: "We need software that supports the sharing of good ideas and solutions, so we will be able to improve digital offerings for people from all over Europe Freedom of choice, access and competition. "

Those who wish to support the campaign can sign an open letter on the initiative's website.
