Politicians of all parties speak out for a longer election period

Thursday, September 14th, 2017 | World News

According to the current political groups in the Bundestag, politicians can soon be elected to their offices longer than before. A vote in the next government period should clarify this. (Source: Rainer Jensen / dpa)
Among the groups currently represented in the Bundestag, there is the unanimous desire to extend the legislative period from four to five years.

In contrast to the newspapers of the editorial network of Germany, representatives of the CDU / CSU, the SPD, the Left and the Greens advocated an adjustment to the legislative periods of the Europaparlament and most landings from the legislative period of the Bundestag.

"Election campaign goes to vices of the government"
Michael Grosse-Brömer (CDU), the Group's Managing Director of the Union, said that most of the landings and the European Parliament would be elected for five years. "On top of that, the election campaign requires its time before the election and is needed after the election period for coalition negotiations, which is at the expense of the government."

SPD faction leader Thomas Oppermann expressed similarity: "This would meet the complexity of many laws, and it would be possible to make meaningful follow-ups before the next election." And for left-wing party leader Dietmar Bartsch it is "not conclusive" that the Bundestag has a shorter legislative period than the other parliaments. Green Party leader Britta Haßelmann also declared that her party was "open to an extension of the election period to five years." Bartsch and Hasselmann also suggested that a reform be combined with the introduction of elements of direct democracy.
