PES 2018 in the test: attack on Fifa with RB Leipzig and more tactics

Anyone expecting major changes to the PES licenses will be disappointed again this year. Many major clubs in the European leagues have to be adjusted manually in the editor, who wants to play officially with FC Bayern will not be around Fifa again. Only Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and now RB Leipzig will be among the champions of the league, as well as some great international names such as FC Barcelona and Liverpool. In addition, some of the team members of the respective teams are now integrated.

The last somewhat old-fashioned menu was overly revised – the surfaces look more modern, the intersections more atmospheric. In game modes, however, much remains the same; despite minor innovations in preparation and random games and the transfer system, the focus remains on career and championship. Online are waiting for some additions like a new mode for 2-against-2 and 3-against-3-coop games, but the servers were not available at the time of the test.
Play like Guardiola
On the course the innovations are noticeable – this year, again, much more emphasis is placed on realism and the degree of difficulty thereby somewhat increased. The gameplay is lower, dribbling more challenging, sprints more difficult. Remote shots have a little less force, and it feels as if the AI ​​is now somewhat more unpredictable, which often makes new game situations possible and makes it more complicated to always proceed with the same tactics. Even more extensive is the strategic intervention possibilities – whoever wants to work down into the smallest detail, in the style of a Guardiola several times in the game can adjust the way of playing. The standard situation also offers more options – it is possible to adjust various variants and carry out various adaptations, for example, during positioning, even before execution.

There are few optimizations in the game commentary – the annoying with constant repetitions and partly inappropriate assessments of the play situation. For this, the optics make progress – especially in the case of the player animations, such as the rotations, again, something is more realistic. There are also a few eye-catching details, such as the seat of the jerseys or the tattoos of the players.
PES 2018 will be released on September 14th, 2017 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and costs about 50 euros. The Playstation-4 version was available for testing. We could not try out the PC implementation. After many complaints about the quality of the PC players last year, Konami has promised for this year, however, improvement: The PC implementation should be at the same technical level as the console versions.
The innovations are not as severe as they are announced by Konami. Technically, the differences from the previous year are more in the details, and anyone who criticizes Konami's kick for years on lack of licenses, sober presentation and perhaps also the somewhat stagnating modes, will not be a fan this year either. The changes on the pitch, on the other hand, are noticeable: it takes more time to adapt the more complex, slightly slower and heavier-to-be-mastered moves as desired. In addition, there are even more tactical intervention possibilities, which can initially be overwhelmed, but with every further match the feeling grow to be able to really react to the respective play situation.
