Packstations: Amazon wants DHL to compete with locker package boxes

Saturday, September 16th, 2017 | Gadgets

Amazon wants to strengthen its delivery services and make the receipt of goods more convenient for customers. For this purpose, the company is building a network of company-owned packing stations. They are in direct competition with the already established DHL Packstations. The so-called lockers have already been available for some time, including Shell petrol stations, and the system has now been officially launched.

180 Amazon stations against 3,000 DHL stations
Currently more than 180 Amazon Lockers are available in the Federal territory. Customers can have their orders delivered to a low-priced locker and pick them up there. Most of the packing stations are located in Munich, Augsburg, Berlin, Hamburg and in several cities in the Ruhr area, including Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Oberhausen, Wuppertal, Essen and Duisburg. Around 80 of the stations are in Berlin, there are currently about 30 in Munich. By the end of the year there should be around 300 in Germany. The petrol station Shell alone is planning to set up another 100 stations by the end of the year.

This means that there are far less packing stations than DHL, which has been expanding its network for 15 years. According to DHL, there are currently around 3,000 stations in Germany spread across the entire federal territory. Both Amazon and DHL offer their packing stations free of charge.
Amazon-Locker in O2-Shops and Spätis
To start, Amazon called a new big partner with Telefónica. In some O2 shops, locker pack stations are also set up. The first three will be in Berlin and Munich, two of them in Berlin. Later, another O2 shop in Munich and Wuppertal will be equipped with it.

Collaboration with Telefónica and other retailers is intended to make the packing stations accessible to customers who travel by bicycle or public transport through the city. Loosely in shops are tied however at their opening times. Amazon also wants to make as many stations as possible for drivers, so the cooperation with Shell.
Amazon works among other things in Berlin also with many late sales offices together. If you want to set up a locker station, you must make the space available for Amazon and take over the current electricity costs. In the stations, a SIM card is included, which can access the Internet via mobile radio. Therefore, it is also important that the installation location for such a station is in the mobile radio reception area.
The operation of the lockers is similar to those of DHL.
