Orbán wants to pay EU for border fence

Friday, September 1st, 2017 | World News

Hungary wants to shift the cost of its border fence to the defense of refugees to the EU. Brussels had to reimburse at least half of the 800 million euros that Hungary had spent on the barriers to its southern border, said the staff chief of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Janos Lazar, in Budapest.

The tooth not only protects Hungary, but also the rest of Europe. "Brussels must pay its share," said Lazar. It is about "practical European solidarity". Prime Minister Orban had sent the demand to Brussels in a letter to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Hungary erected barbed wire fence on the border with Serbia
In 2015, more than 400,000 refugees had come to Hungary on their way to Western Europe. The country then erected a barbed wire fence on the border with Serbia. The plant was expanded and extended to the border with Croatia, 3000 border guards were sent into the deployment.

The Hungarian fence contributed to the closure of the so-called Balkan route, through which many refugees had also come to Germany. Since then, hardly a refugee has taken this path. The EU had sharply criticized the border attachment.

The right-wing Hungarian government is pursuing a policy of systematically deterring migrants. The few refugees who are still coming into the country are being held in Transitzonen near the border. Orban had described migration as a "trojan horse for terrorism".
