Number of hungry people is rising again

Saturday, September 16th, 2017 | World News

The hope of fighting hunger in the world is fading. By 2016, according to UN figures, 815 million people worldwide suffered from malnutrition. This is 38 million more than last year.

The number of hungry people rose again after years of improving food supply, according to the United Nations Agricultural Organization. Whether this development will continue in the coming years is unclear.

The declared goal of ending hunger and malnutrition by 2030 could only be achieved if peace and stability were ensured, the UN warned. For the fact that more people were suffering from hunger, the consequences of climate change lie primarily with the increase in violent conflicts all over the world.

In crises the famine is greatest
Half of the people who have too little to eat are living in crises. In the past decade, the number of conflicts has risen dramatically, and violent clashes are becoming increasingly complex.

In civil war countries such as southern Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen, there is a danger of famine, the strongest form of a hunger crisis. "We can not allow these alarms to be ignored longer," a FAO spokesman said.

But not only in crisis regions, the supply situation had deteriorated. Peaceful districts suffered from droughts and flood catastrophes, which were partly related to the strong development of the weather phenomenon El Niño. A global decline in economic output also contributed to the deterioration in food supply.

Africans and Asians
The proportion of the hungry is about eleven per cent of the world's population. Most of those affected live in Africa (243 million) and Asia (520 million). Millions of children suffer as a result of hunger for shortages. They are often too small for their age and weigh too little for their body size.

For the first time, the FAO prepared the annual report in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
