Hundreds of aftershocks have followed the strong earthquake on Thursday in Mexico. The assistants are always confronted with problems. In the state of Oaxaca the number of death victims continues to rise.

At least 90 death victims have been discovered. As the governor of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat, announced on Sunday, 71 people died there alone. In two neighboring countries, a total of at least 19 people were killed. Afterquakes made the aid in the particularly severely affected city of Juchitán more difficult. In two states, the schools should remain closed on Monday.

The earthquake of magnitude 8.1 had occurred on Thursday evening shortly before midnight (local time). It was so strong that it still wobbled Mexico city houses in the capital, more than 1,000 kilometers away.

Nearly 800 aftershocks counted
Since then, there have been hundreds of aftershocks: the authorities have recorded nearly 800 shocks, including one of the strengths of 5.2 on Sunday morning. According to the US earthquake, nearly 60 of the earthquakes had a magnitude of 4.5 and more. Some of the earthquakes forced the helpers in the large city of Juchitán to interrupt their work temporarily. There, a good third of the houses had fallen or become uninhabitable.

On Sunday, the government's transport aircraft brought relief supplies to Juchitán, where at least 37 of the 90 death victims died. Soldiers distributed boxes with food. Some people slept outside for fear of further collapsing buildings, while policemen and soldiers with shovels and hammers helped to demolish the ruined ruins in Juchitán. Trucks made tons of rubbish away. Also the hospital of the city was no longer to be used, instead the patients were taken to a gym outside of Juchitán.
