Norway: Conservative government wins election

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 | World News

Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg can continue to govern according to preliminary forecasts. But it can still be scarce, because two of their partners are close to the four percent hurdle.

In the parliamentary elections in Norway, a victory for the bourgeois government under the conservative Prime Minister Erna Solberg appears. According to a first prognosis after closing the polls, their party Høyre is together with the existing coalition partners just before the social-democratic challenger Jonas Gahr Støre with his partners.

Solberg, who has been Prime Minister in Norway since 2013, can probably continue to govern. An official result was expected on Tuesday.

85 mandates required
For a majority, the Norwegian parliament requires 85 seats. Solberg's coalition of conservative Høyre and a right-wing populist party needs the support of the Christian KRF and the liberal Venstre for a majority. Together, the four parties in the forecast on Monday evening came to about 88 seats. Minority governments are common in Norway.

The alliance between the Workers' Party, the Center Party and the Socialist Left Party, which was initiated by Støre, can count with 81 seats.

As a result, Støre's Social Democrats remain the strongest party with about 27.5 per cent of the votes as in 2013. But they lose more than three percent. The coalition partners are growing, but not enough.

Highly developed state structure
The second strongest party is Solbergs Høyre, which is about 25.6 percent. The right-hand populist progress party, which had made it to the government for the first time in 2013, came to about 15 percent in the forecast. In their youth organization the condemned mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik was formerly a member.

The Greens are not likely to achieve the four percent hurdle. Even for the Christian KRF and the Liberal Venstre, which up to now have tolerated the conservative government, it could still be scarce.

Norway, with its 5.23 million inhabitants, is the most developed country in the world. Life standards and satisfaction are high. Since the country encountered the first commercially viable source of petroleum at the end of the 1960s, it has earned a lot of money. Declining oil prices, however, also led to lower government revenues and the loss of thousands of jobs. The unemployment rate rose to 4.5 percent. Meanwhile, however, the economy is growing again.
