More than 600,000 Syrians return home

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 | World News

Due to the improved security situation in the region, more and more Syrians are returning to their homeland. According to the UN, more than 600,000 people broke into their villages and cities during the first half of the year. However, the number of newly displaced was even higher.

As reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Monday, 84 per cent of the 602,759 returnees were internally displaced, who had sought shelter in other parts of the country. 16 per cent returned from neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan. "This is the largest return wave so far," said an IOM spokeswoman.

About 27 percent of the returnees claimed to want to protect their possessions as a reason for their return. 25 percent said the improvement in the economic situation and eleven percent improved security conditions in their home town. On the other hand, 14 percent indicated a worsening of the economic situation at their shelter as a reason and eleven percent called sociocultural problems.

  Return to Aleppo
Some 67 per cent of the expellees returned to the province of Aleppo. The provincial capital of the same name was the scene of violent fighting last year, but the violence has declined significantly since the defeat of the insurgents. According to the UN, 97 per cent of the returnees returned to their own homes, although access to drinking water and health services was limited in many cases.

At the same time, in the first half of the year, more than 800,000 people had to flee in some parts of the country due to ongoing fighting, many of them for the second or even third time. According to the IOM, there are still more than six million Syrians as internally displaced, and more than five million live as refugees abroad.
