Microsoft: Upgrade of Windows 10 S three months longer possible

Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 | Gadgets

Microsoft has announced that users of Windows 10 S will have three more months to switch to Windows 10 Pro free of charge. After 31 March 2018, the change will then cost 50 euros. This information hides Redmond in a blog entry, which deals with the four colors of the surface laptop – the variants are now available in more countries.

The Surface Laptop we tested is one of the few devices with Windows 10 S. Other convertibles and notebooks come from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. Most models are intended for educational institutions and therefore relatively inexpensive, but the surface laptop costs at least € 1,150. But there is only one Core i5-7200U, 4 GB of memory and a 128-GB SSD.
Windows 10 S (Test) differs from a classic Windows 10 mainly because only store apps can be used. This restricts the choice of available software, although developers are free to distribute their applications through Microsoft's store. Adobe Creative Cloud, most games – with exceptions like Gears of War, Oracles Java, Microsoft's own Visual Studio, the input prompt, Powershell or browsers such as Chrome and Firefox are missing.

Differences in the speed of applications or the barely relevant boot time for end users anyway, we could not determine with Windows 10 S. A higher security purely by store apps is not necessary, gaps are partly independent. The classic – macros in a text document – continues to work when a few hours are spent on the hack.
