Microsoft introduces new AI platform Brainwave

Thursday, August 24th, 2017 | Gadgets

Artificial intelligence in the cloud is a difficult task if the latency is to be low. Microsoft wants to master this with its new project Brainwave.

Systems that work with an artificial intelligence need the best performance right away. Whether it's a robot or a smart gadget, it's all about speeding up the next action. With a new project with the code name Brainwave, Microsoft wants to support developers and provide a cloud infrastructure for AI with almost no latency. This is due to the new field-programmable gate array chip from Intel. The Stratix 10 comes at a speed of 39.5 Teraflops. The architecture is designed in such a way that a neural network is assigned to several FPGAs. This should reduce the latencies. The project also includes the Microsoft DNN processing unit, which, unlike the competition, can handle several data types. This should not affect the performance but also the software stack of Brainwave is flexible. Several deep learning frameworks are supported. In addition to the Cognitive Toolkit from Microsoft, Google's tensorflow should also be usable. Further support will follow, as Microsoft writes on its blog. To the exact availability Microsoft does not give exact details, but customers are to receive more information soon. Brainwave is unlikely to be surprisingly moving into Microsoft Azure.
