Merkel wants to extend border controls to Austria

Friday, August 25th, 2017 | World News

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) wants to have border controls carried out at the inner-European borders longer. The controls should be maintained "until the security authorities tell us they are no longer necessary". The EU Commission, however, insists on the right to apply.

According to a spokeswoman for the Commission, the current special permit for controls at the German-Austrian border should be phased out in November. The so-called Schengen boundary code allows a maximum of three extensions. The Federal Government, however, is open to requesting a new special permit. However, the Federal Government would have to prove a serious threat to public order or internal security.

Significantly fewer refugees pass the border
The controls on the German-Austrian border had been approved in 2015 because of the large influx of refugees across the Balkan route, contrary to the actual freedom of travel in the Schengen area. There, however, the situation has now significantly relaxed.

The statements from Brussels on the legal situation had caused excitement among Bavarian politicians. CSU General Secretary Andreas Scheuer stated that Europe is not doing well "if the EU does not want to protect the external borders and then want to ban Member States' own border controls".
