Mega-evacuation launched in Frankfurt

Sunday, September 3rd, 2017 | World News

According to the police, the largest evacuation campaign in German post-war history due to bombing in Frankfurt has begun without major problems. Everything is going according to plan so far, said a police officer on Sunday morning. More than 60,000 residents were asked to leave their apartments from 6 am onwards.

From 8.00 am, the police will check whether no one is really in the restricted zone within a radius of 1.5 kilometers around the location of the 1.8-ton airmine. With loudspeaker announcements, the police will warn people who are still in their homes. A helicopter with a thermal imaging camera is also to be used.

At noon the defusing of the explosive device is to begin. The experts count on a duration of several hours. At early Sunday morning the atmosphere in Frankfurt was very relaxed. Many people had apparently left their houses on Saturday. The authorities hope that all people voluntarily leave the barrier zone. Otherwise, the schedule for the defusing action might be mixed.

The patients of two hospitals and the residents of several retirement homes had already been brought to safety on Saturday. Because the old world war bomb with 1.4 tons of explosives in an explosion could cause great damage, the authorities had decided to the extensive evacuation. The bomb had been discovered during construction work near the Westend campus. On Saturday, some 21,000 people had to leave their houses because of a bombing in Koblenz (Rhineland-Palatinate). The defuse of the dude from the Second World War succeeded without problems.
