Friday, August 25th, 2017 | World News

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has banned the most important platform of the scene on the Internet in a strike against left-wing extremism. On Friday morning rooms of the operators of the page "linksunten.indymedia.org" were searched in Freiburg. The police found numerous weapons.

"The continued operation of the site is now a criminal offense," said Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière (CDU) in Berlin. "The prohibition I have ordered serves to break down the structure of the association and confiscate the property."

The website is the most important platform for violent left-wing extremists in Germany, according to de Maizière. "For years, they have been using this platform to sow hatred against other thinkers and representatives of the country." The events during the G20 summit in Hamburg showed the consequences of such agitation. There had been heavy riots in July.

Knives and batons confiscated
During the raid in a total of five objects, knives, batons, pipes and twins were confiscated. There were no arrests or arrests.

In the case of the ban on the platform, the security authorities applied a trick: it was intended to be a ban on association – the operators were therefore classified by the authorities as an association. In this context, the association's characteristics were also prohibited. The prohibition was expressly not directed against the global network Indymedia.

The security authorities, the website launched at the beginning of 2009, is regarded as "the most important medium of violent-oriented left-wing extremism," the current constitution protection report states. For years now, there has been a forum for largely dissociable reports on left-wing extremist agitation and crimes.

Call for violence at the G20 summit
In the context of the riots on the edge of the G20 summit, the side played an important role, according to the constitution protection, violent protests were also called upon. On the page, users can post anonymous posts. The Twitter account of the platform was still available at noon.

The protection of the constitution also states that the platform is "the most used forum for self-attestation of violent left-wing extremists". Most of the explanations published there remained longer on the platform. In addition, there were also solidarity declarations for the three fugitive members of the former "Red Army Fraction" (RAF), Daniela Klette, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. The three are suspects in connection with serious crimes, they have long been sought by the police.
