Librem 5: KDE supports free smartphone with plasma interface

Saturday, September 16th, 2017 | Gadgets

KDE has announced that it will support the campaign for a free, Linux-based smartphone. On the Librem 5, currently funded by Purism by crowdfunding, then KDE's user interface Plasma Mobile could run. Lydia Pintscher from KDE e.V. speaks of a dream of the community that could be realized.

The Librem 5 should consist of components as free as possible, only proprietary technology will be used for the baseband. Still, the hardware details of the smartphone project are not final – and will not be before the end of the Crowdfunding campaign in the shop of Purism. For example, it is unclear which processor the smartphone about 600 US dollars will have.
KDE is looking forward to the Purisms hardware platform
"Having full access to Purisms hardware platform is a dream for the KDE community," said Lydia Pintscher. "The partnership with Purism will enable us to integrate Plasma Mobile seamlessly into a commercially available device." Todd Weaver from Purism assumes that KDE's plasma is a "serious candidate" to break the duopoly of Android and iOS in the smartphone area.

It would take a lot of money to make it happen. The campaign has so far only reached about 22 percent of the self-imposed target of 1.5 million US dollars. 38 days remain. Users also have to be prepared to wait for the smartphone for a long time, according to the project partners, the delivery will take place in January 2019 at the earliest.

For customers from Europe, the 600 US dollars are subject to additional costs such as import turnover tax and customs fees. If the Crowdfunding fail, users get the money back.
