IEEE 802.11ax: Asus Introduces Router with New WLAN Standard

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 | Gadgets

At the electronics fair Ifa 2017, Asus has presented a WLAN router that supports the non-finalized standard 802.11ax.

Asus claims that the RT-AX88U can reach up to four times higher data rates than 802.11ac. In figures the values are in the range of 5.952 MBit / s – at least in theory as a combination of the data rates of 2.4 and 5 GHz.
The router works in both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz band. A large portion of the theoretical data rate is achieved at 4.804 Mbps over the 5 GHz band, which is significantly faster than the current 802.11ac routers, which are often two GB / s. The router has four wireless antennas installed for wireless communication. The rest of the data rate, 1,148 Mbps, is to be handled on the 2.4 GHz band. However, currently no 802.11ax clients are available for the utilization.
Little known information so far
To save energy, the RT-AX88U uses the technology Target Wake Time (TWT). It can be used to allow the router to enter standby mode at specific times. According to Asus, the new device can manage more clients via MU-MIMO than a WLAN 802.11ac router.
For more information on cable-bound Ethernet connections, USB or other interfaces, Asus has not yet announced at the fair.

We had reported in the origin version of this message, Asus' new router comes with an Asus's own WLAN standard. In fact, the IEEE standard is still under development. We have reworked the article accordingly.
