"I hope that everything goes well"

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 | World News

The dogan Akhanli, a Turkish-born German writer, who was arrested in Spain, is not handed over to Turkey according to his lawyer. The country does not offer its clients a legal process, Ilias Uyar told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung".

"I hope that everything goes well," said the author temporarily arrested at the instigation of Ankara in Spain on Monday before journalists in Madrid. He stressed that "extradition would not only be a catastrophe for me, it would also be a catastrophe for Spain."

Akhanli was arrested on a holiday in Granada on Saturday, but after a day he was released. He must not leave Spain for the duration of the extradition procedure and must pass his passport. After the arrest, he had become "dizzy", he now told. "I felt very bad."

"I am shocked that I am not safe in Europe."
"This is actually a frightening experience for me because I thought I was safe in European hands and that the long hands of arbitrariness and arrogance could not reach it," declared the 60-year-old, who is exclusively German citizenship Has. "I was shocked by the fact that I was not safe in Europe."

On the Spanish trip to Akhanlis, his lawyer Uyar said Akhanli had not been informed by the German police that he was threatened with a trip abroad. Uyar said Akhanli's case was not about prosecution, but about interpol hunting. On Monday, according to the report, Akhanli will report for the first time to a special court in Madrid, which is responsible for deliveries and terrorism.

 Critics of the Turkish government
The writer is critically opposed to the government in Ankara. On Saturday, he was arrested for a Turkish arrest warrant at his resort in Spain. Turkey had filed an "urgent note" (Red Notice) against Akhanli at Interpol's international police department. After an intervention by the Foreign Office in Berlin, the Turkish-born author, who had fled to Germany in 1991, came back free. According to his lawyer, he may not leave Madrid for the time being.

Akhanli's lawyer praises Merkel
The attorney of the Cologne writer praised Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for her statements in the case of the arrested writer. "Unlike the journalist Deniz Yücel, who has also been arrested, she has taken a clear position, which pleased me," said Ilias Uyar on Monday of the German press agency.

Earlier Merkel had criticized the role of Turkey and did not rule out a further tightening of the German line. "We have to keep the steps again and again," she told RTL on Sunday evening to ask a question about tougher sanctions. The case has once again heated the conflict between the Federal Government and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
