Homepod firmware: Coming Apple TV with 4K and HDR support

Tuesday, August 8th, 2017 | Gadgets

The homepod firmware, which Apple probably too early published, gives information about the upcoming generation of the set-top box Apple TV price, internally apparently under the code designation J105a develops. The Apple TV should therefore play back 4K content and also high-contrast images with the support of appropriate TVs and displays in HDR output. It should even be supported several HDR standards such as HDR10, DolbyVision and HLG of the Apple TV 5.

These three standards offer a high-dynamic range image for the TV or connected displays, but they are not supported by all devices. HDR10 is used for Ultra-HD Blu-Rays; the DolbyVision format can also be used with this medium. In contrast to normal Ultra-HD Blu-ray discs, some Dolby Vision movies provide dynamic metadata for HDR so that individual movie sequences or even frames can be output differently. HDR10 works with static metadata.

Also the HLG format (Hybrid Log Gamma) is to be found in the firmware, which is not intended for movies, but for television transmissions. Just because the formats are mentioned in the firmware, does not mean that the final Apple TV 5 supports it. HDR10 + from Samsung is not mentioned.

However, there was a further indication in the UK of future 4K and HDR content. Thus in the receipts of the iTunes store corresponding additional notes on acquired films were issued – the footage was still encoded in full HD and without HDR metadata.
On the WWDC 2017, Apple had given the Apple TV and its operating system iOS 11, which is to appear in the autumn and is in the beta test, little space. Apple would later return to it, said company CEO Tim Cook.
