Hitler's bell no longer rings the service

Saturday, September 9th, 2017 | World News

The Protestant church leadership of the Rhineland-Palatinate Herxheim on the mountain has decided that the so-called "Hitler bell" of Herxheim will no longer announce the service.

"The presbyterium would like to prevent the right-wing forces being addressed and the ringing with bell 3 becomes a burden for the people," was the opinion of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate on Friday. Around the 240 kilos heavy bronze bells with Hakenkreuz and the inscription "all for the fatherland Adolf Hitler" there have been discussions for months.

Retired mayor exited from party
Meanwhile, the retired mayor of Herxheim, Ronald Becker, has also left the free voters. He ended his membership with a letter of 6 September, the national association of the party said.

The 54-year-old had come to the criticism after relativistic statements about the Nazi period and the bell hanging in Herxheimer church since 1934. The controversial bell belongs not to the church but to the local community. It hangs together with two ecclesiastical bells in the tower. For the time being, the church community will only be invited to worship with these sound bodies.
