Government helicopters have to stay on the ground

Sunday, August 13th, 2017 | World News

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her ministers obviously have to do without the three governmental helicopters of the type Cougar.

The Luftwaffe ordered strict maintenance rules for the three helicopters because of an urgent safety warning by the European air carrier EASA, Der Spiegel reported. They must therefore be inspected for an hour after each flight, and also after each intermediate landing, by two specialists.

Normal flight operation not possible
According to information from the Luftwaffe, a normal flight operation with the helicopters, which the Chancellor, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the most important Federal Ministers are to be available for urgent appointments in Germany, is impossible.

According to the report, the safety requirements are based on an accident with a similar helicopter in Norway in April 2016, where 13 people died. The Chancellor thus currently frequently uses helicopters of the federal police.
