Gigabit: cable network operators want faster analog switch-off

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 | Gadgets

According to the digitalization report 2017, the proportion of digital TV use in the cable has risen to 88.6 percent. As the Anga (Association of German Cable Network Operators) announced on September 5, 2017, there is therefore a tendency in the market to discontinue analogue cable television for almost 1.8 million cable households from the end of 2018.

In order to create legal certainty, this move should be "flanked by a legal regulation", the report states. The shutdown of the analogue TV transmission in the cable provides capacities for Gigabit bandwidths for 17.5 million customers.
In June 2017, the cable network operator Unitymedia switched the analogue TV signal in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-W├╝rttemberg into five stages. According to estimates by Unitymedia and the Landesmedienanstalt, 91 percent of the Unitymedia customers already saw digital television by the end of 2016.

25.2 million households receive HDTV resolution according to the latest digitization report. The share of HDTV households in Germany thus rose from 53.1 to 65.7 per cent within one year.
One reason for this is the switch to DVB-T2 HD in Terrestrial, which took place in many conurbations on 29 March 2017. Currently, only 7.4 percent of the TV households receive television on the terrestrial.
IP-TV has already gained 6.9 percent of TV households. On the other hand, 45.7 and 45.9 percent of the satellite and cable are unchanged.

Although 69% of the population is still dominated by traditional television, young people are already more on the lookout than linear: among the 14 to 29-year-olds, video-on-demand is 45% and television is 38% , In total, 71.3 per cent of the 14 to 29-year-olds already use the VoD service, while the share of the total population is still 35.7 per cent or 24.8 million voD users in Germany.
