Germans are in court in Turkey

Thursday, September 7th, 2017 | World News

A German woman is being tried in the south-eastern Turkst city of Karaman because of terror accusations. She was the first German to be arrested after the failed coup last year.

The 49-year-old threatened a multi-year prison sentence, report "Süddeutsche Zeitung", WDR and NDR, citing on them information available. The prosecution therefore places the woman at a disadvantage on the Gülen movement pursued in Turkey. This is held by the government in Ankara for the failed coup attempt of July last year, which, however, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), however, doubts.

According to Turkish investigations, the Germans, who do not have any other citizenship, should have been the leader of a local women's movement within the network of preacher Fethullah Gülen, which could be punishable.

The Turkish-born 49-year-old lived according to the report 20 years in southwest Germany and has been the German passport for 15 years. After her husband's death, she moved back to Turkey about three years ago to live there.

Last year, the woman was the first German to be arrested after the military coup in August 2016. After an intervention by the Foreign Office, she was released two weeks later, but was not allowed to leave Turkey. According to the "SZ", a consular agent was not present at the process start.

The imprisonment of German citizens in Turkey has strained relations between the two countries for months. Prominent cases are the journalists Deniz Yücel and Mesale Tolu as well as the human rights activist Peter Steudtner.

On Thursday a German who had been arrested in Antalya last week was released after being heard by the police. However, he may not leave the country. His wife, who had been arrested, had already been released on Monday and had gone to Germany.
