Vodafone intends to invest an additional € 2 billion in Germany for glass fiber connections in commercial areas and rural communities over the next four years. This was announced by the British telecommunication company on 11 September 2017. "With our gigabit offensive, we are launching the largest private fixed-line investment program in German history – and bringing gigabit speed to one third of all Germans," said Hanns Ametsreiter, head of Vodafone Germany.

The Gigakabel program is designed to make Gigabit speeds available for 12.6 million households. Gigagemeinde is a cooperation program with municipalities, which according to the company will provide about two million people in rural areas with glass fiber connections. In the future, Gigagewerbe will bring up to 100,000 companies to the fiber optic network in about 2,000 business parks.
1 GBit / s in the whole cable network comes "successively"
21 percent of its TV cable network Vodafone has already expanded to 500 MBit / s. Vodafone now wants to double this data transfer rate "successively". The beginning will be made as announced from 2019 in Bavaria, also in Saxony, Vodafone is converting to Docsis 3.1. The remaining eleven federal states are to follow the dissemination area. However, no precise timetable was given.
Rural communities want to help Vodafone expand, rent the local infrastructure in a long-term partnership, build the necessary glass fiber connection of the municipality to the backbone and then operate the municipal municipal network with active infrastructure. In total, Vodafone would like to supply about one million households in rural areas with glass fiber.

For commercial customers Vodafone wants to "bring demand-oriented business areas to the fiber optic network – and thus provide up to 100,000 companies in about 2,000 business parks with gigabit data rates". The company announced in July 2017 that a pilot project together with Deutsche Glasfaser in 19 areas of Düsseldorf will provide up to 5,000 companies with fiber connections up to 1 Gbit / s by mid-2018.
