Erdogan is reportedly coming to NRW in March

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017 | World News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also wants to come to Germany to promote a controversial presidential system. As the "Bild" reports on their website, a visit to North Rhine-Westphalia is planned for this in March.

"The President will make an official visit to Strasbourg in March," the newspaper quoted a "high-ranking diplomat" from Ankara. "After that, he will be promoting the presidential system at an event in NRW, the exact location of which has not yet been established," the diplomat said.

For the 16th of April, a popular vote was held in Turkey, in which the Turks living in Germany could also participate. The planned presidential system would give Erdogan much more power and weaken Parliament. Critics see in this transformation of the state leadership a further step towards the consolidation of Erdogan's authoritarian power structures.

  Election campaigns have a tradition
Last Saturday the Turkish Prime Minister, Binali Yildirim, had already campaigned for constitutional change in the presence of thousands of countrymen in Oberhausen, accompanied by strong protests. Erdogan had come to Cologne for election campaigns in 2008 and 2014. He also wants to promote the referendum in other countries of Europe among the citizens who are eligible for elections in Turkey.

In the meantime, Juergen Hardt, the CDU foreign policy politician, has described Erdogan as "undesirable" in Germany. In a guest contribution to the "Weser-Kurier", Hardt wrote: "We must consistently prevent any attempt to carry the deep Turkish conflict to Germany."

The Federal Government did not have any knowledge of such Erdogan plans in Germany at the beginning of the week. On Monday in Berlin, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that a "concrete desire for Erdogan" was not known to the government.
