Election violations in local elections in Russia

Monday, September 11th, 2017 | World News

Election observers have complained about numerous suffrage violations during the local elections in Russia on Sunday. There were many complaints, especially in Moscow, the independent organization Golos said.

Of the 144 million Russians, about 40 million were called to vote on governors or municipal parliaments. The participation was low, according to reports from Russian agencies. In the capital, there were 1502 seats in the representations of the individual districts, with more than 7,000 candidates.

Most of the candidates represented Kremlin's loyal parties. But the liberal opposition party Jabloko and ex-parliamentarian Dmitri Gudkov have also raised about 1,000 candidates to win seats on this lowest level of self-administration.

For the state power, the election day is the last test before the Russian presidential election, which is expected to take place on 18 March 2018. It is expected that President Vladimir Putin will then compete for a fourth term.

Moscow's mayor Sergei Sobyanin dismissed the leadership of the Novo-Peredelkino district on Saturday because the officials had been caught in manipulations of the election. Also elected were 16 governors and heads of sub-republics. Some of them have recently put Putin on these positions.
