Donald Trump has attacked Canada and Mexico because of the Nafta Agreement

Monday, August 28th, 2017 | World News

US President Donald Trump has attacked Canada and Mexico via Twitter – because of his view "difficult" attitude in the new negotiations on the North American trade pact Nafta.

His tone is in contradiction to a joint statement published by the chief negotiators of the three countries after the conclusion of the first round of talks.

"We are in Nafta (worst tradedeal ever concluded) with Mexico & Canada," wrote Trump. "Both very difficult, will we have to cancel?"

The negotiations on a new Nafta framework were put under pressure by Trump: He argues that the trade agreement strongly disadvantages US workers and the US economy. Already in the past week, Trump had declared at a rally in Arizona that the US would "probably end Nafta at the end sometime."

After the conclusion of the first round, US Trade Commissioner Robert Lighthizer, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland and Mexico's Minister of Economic Affairs, Ildefonso Guajardo, had recently expressed a positive opinion. The number and range of proposals in the five-day talks reflected the aim of all three countries to achieve an "ambitious result", the Joint Statement said. The next round of talks will take place from 1 to 5 September in Mexico.

The free trade agreement Nafta entered into force in early 1994. The zone covers 25 percent of global economic output.

In another tweet, Trump reaffirmed his intention to build a wall on the border with Mexico. Mexico will pay for it, "by refund / other", the President wrote. The government there, however, has repeatedly made it clear that it does not think to pay for the costs.
