Denverton: Intel's Atom C3000 have 16 cores at 32 watts

Monday, August 21st, 2017 | Gadgets

Intel has introduced the Atom C3000 alias Denverton with all models. So far, the server CPUs were only announced and the Ark database listed so far only the Atom C3338 with two cores. The processors, however, have up to 16 cores and are therefore expected to be more than twice as fast as the Atom C2000 (Avoton / Rangeley), which had been published by Intel in 2013.

The Denverton integrates cores with Goldmont technology that include a wider front end, other integer ALUs, an out-of-order floating-point unit, an improved jump prediction, SHA1 as SHA256 in hardware, and a longer pipeline compared to Silvermont and its Shrink Airmont having. The memory controller supports Dualchannel with DDR4-2400 speed and can address a maximum of 256 GB of RAM.
From the Cloud to the IoT
Depending on the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit), the Atom C3000 is designed for cloud storage servers, network applications or Internet-the-things (IoT) systems. All Denverton support 2.5 and some 10 Gigabit Ethernet with up to four ports. New is QuickAssist, which is used for compression and cryptography. Unlike the Atom chips for end-user systems, the C3000 family does not have an integrated graphics unit.

In the system-on-a-chip, 20 PCIe-Gen3 lanes as well as 16 SATA-6-Gbit / s and 8 USB 3.0 ports are installed. However, due to 20 HSIO lanes, not all functions can be used in parallel. The Denverton is produced in an optimized 14 nm process. The CPUs clock their cores up to 2.2 GHz – there is no boost. The C3955 is the fastest processor with 16 cores at 2.1 GHz and a thermal loss of 32 watts.
The chips are soldered onto the BGA socket 1310, the package measures 34 x 28 mm. First boards come from Asrock and Supermicro.
