Christian Lindner, the 18-year-old

Friday, September 15th, 2017 | World News

was "to change the world, not a briefcase," is to be read on Christian Lindner's electoral placards. Twenty years ago the world of the FDP bosses looked different: as a young entrepreneur, he made thick pants with a Mercedes and a pop tie. A video becomes a social media hit.

His choice spots in black and white, with a T-shirt and a three-day beard, have already passed through the net. The Twitter community celebrated it with funny photo collages as "ThermiLindner". Now a video from the youth of FDP boss Christian Lindner makes a sensation. The RTL broadcast "Stern TV" has unearthed a three-minute film, which was shot in 1997 for a youth magazine of Deutsche Welle. In the meantime, the video has been clicked on the Facebook page of the program more than 1.2 million times and has been commenting on social media a thousand times.

Our find of the week: FDP boss Christian Lindner 1997! Posted by stern TV on Wednesday, September 13 2017

In the borrowed Mercedes, the then 18-year-old young entrepreneur and a friend at the schoolyard of the Gymnasium of his hometown Wermelskirchen near Cologne. The outfit as out of the manager's manual: suit, blue shirt with white collar, briefcase and cow patch tie. While his classmates bravely buff for the Abi (for Lindner time, which runs through the "shredder"), a self-confidence bursting young boys with blond strubbelhaaren sells speeches and marketing concepts to small firms. The top floor of Grandma and Grandpa Lindner becomes the bossetage. "The customer says we have made the right catch," says the young Linder, who was already as eloquent as he is today.

Lindner and the insolvency
His business motto at that time: "Ran to work, work to cope, problems are only thorny chances!" This fits perfectly to the mission of Bundestags-Comeback. Lindner wants the FDP, which flew from the Bundestag in 2013, to return to the Berlin stage on the next Sunday. The 38-year-old FDP star has now and then but also brought a bloody nose.

A small advertising agency, founded by him with partners, goes into insolvency at the end of 2001 after the bursting of the New Economy bubble. The political competition accuses him of this. As in the summer of 2015, when an SPD deputy in the Düsseldorf Landtag denounces Lindner's failure in the economy – he answers with a furious tale, which is a click-hit on Youtube. "These Häme also accompanies many other people who dare and sometimes fail," writes Lindner, who is a digital hipster among the German politicians in his election campaign on his website.

Lindner reacts to Twitter
The former pupil of the then FDP leader Guido Westerwelle is used to polarizing. In the social networks the video of '97 goes through the ceiling. "He already understands his craft at that time, talking to a waffle to the ear, and to be 100% convinced of himself," writes a woman at Facebook. Another defends Lindner: "This envy of culture in this country makes me sick. Why are courageous young people smiled, even though they are a model for their classmates?"

Thanks, #sterntv. This was 1997 founder culture 1.0 😂 CL https://t.co/TiTn2axZHL- Christian Lindner (@c_lindner) September 13, 2017
Lindner amused himself about the video time travel: "Thank you, sterntv. That was 1997 founder culture 1.0", he twittered with a Smiley, the tears laughs. PR-professional Lindner should have a good laugh. Thanks to the video, he is again "talk of the town" ten days before the election – and free of charge.
