Chile: Liberation of abortion ban approved

Monday, August 21st, 2017 | World News

Chile's Constitutional Court has given the right to legalize abortions in certain cases.

Conservative opposition politicians had objected to the loosening of the abortion law by Parliament before the Constitutional Court. The judgment of Monday confirms the decriminalization of pregnancy disrupts in three special cases: in the case of a life-threatening mother, no survival for the baby and rape.

"With this, we, the women of Chile, have regained a basic right to be able to make their own decisions before extreme cases," declared the socialist state-nominee Michelle Bachelet after announcing the judge's verdict.

The bill had been tabled by the President in Parliament two years ago. The now liberalized legislation came from the time of the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and was considered one of the most restrictive in the world. According to the Ministry of Health, 33,000 illegal abortions are carried out annually in Chile.
