Sunday, August 13th, 2017 | World News

A car drove into a crowd on the edge of a demonstration in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. Previously, because of violent riots between right-wing extremists and counter-demonstrators, the exception was called out.

Videos shared on Twitter show how a high-speed car drove into a group of protesters protesting against the march of right-wing groups.

The video footage of the incident suggests that the unknown driver deliberately and at high speed drove into the demonstrators. The journey was stopped by a collision with another vehicle moving at a speed of the middle of the protesters. After the crash, the car set back and left at high speed in reverse.

Armed with sticks and pepper spray
In the previous hours there had been violent clashes between right-wing extremists and counter-demonstrators in the city. Both sides were armed with sticks, protective shields and pepper spray. Members of ultra-right-wing local authorities marched with firearms. Several people were injured in the riots.

The occasion of the rally under the motto "Unifying the Rights" was a city council decision to remove a statue of the Southern General Robert E. Lee from the American Civil War (1861 to 1865). Up to 6000 participants from different spectra of the ultra-right were expected.

After the escalation of the violence, the police first declared the meeting "unlawful" and began to clear the park in which the controversial statue is located.

We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one! – Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2017
A few hours after the outbreak of the riots, US President Donald Trump also spoke out and condemned the riots. On Twitter he wrote: "There is no place for this kind of violence in America."
