Before Bundestagswahl: Facebook deletes tens of thousands of spammers accounts

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 | Gadgets

Facebook has identified and removed tens of thousands of counterfeit accounts over the past few months. The social network presented the action in connection with the Bundestag elections in September. It is, however, unclear to what extent, with the help of counterfeit accounts, political false news was spread to influence the outcome of the election.

The accounts were only identified by the analysis of activity patterns, without the actual contents being considered. "For example, our systems recognize when identical content is posted repeatedly or an increased number of messages are sent," Facebook said.
These technical advances will also allow us to reduce the spread of unauthorized content, including spam, misinformation, or other misleading content commonly used by people who run counterfeit accounts. "
The company said in a paper published in April 2017 that it intends to act against information campaigns in its network. The 13-page paper states that political information campaigns based on "false reinforcement" are operated less with social bots but with people with non-authentic accounts. With the help of new analysis methods, however, it is also possible to recognize manually created fake accounts. In this way, Facebook was able to take action against 30,000 fake accounts in France before the presidential elections.
Facebook announced early in August to use more self-learning software in the fight against counterfeit news. Among other things, this should be used to determine which reports, which are to be distributed on the platform, should be submitted to the fact-finding co-operation with Facebook.
