Barcelona: Grand demonstration against terrorism

Nine days after the attacks of Barcelona and Cambrils on Saturday tens of thousands of inhabitants of the Catalan metropolis with a large demonstration set a sign against terror and violence.

Under the motto "No tinc por" (a Catalan for: I'm Not Afraid), the people moved from Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça de Catalunya – the place from which an assassin came August 17 had controlled a vans in the pedestrian zone of Las Ramblas.

For the first time in the history of Spain took part with King Felipe VI. A monarch participated in such a mass demonstration. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, numerous other government representatives as well as employees of the security forces who had looked after the victims of the attacks marched through the streets of Barcelona. Many people, in memory of the victims, held red and yellow roses in their hands, the colors of the Spanish national flag.

With the loudly chanted phrase "I am not afraid" the population had already made it clear shortly after the attacks that they would not be intimidated by Islamic terrorism. Also on Saturday again and again voice chords broke up, in order to defy the violence. In the assassinations 15 people had died, 120 others were injured. Six of them are still in critical condition.
